Facebook is leaning toward long-form video

Image
This story was delivered to BI Intelligence " Digital Media Briefing "  subscribers. To learn more and subscribe, please  click here . Facebook tweaked how it surfaces videos to users in its News Feed: longer videos with higher completion rates will now be ranked more prominently in the News Feed. As a side effect, shorter videos may see a dip in distribution on the News Feed. Publishers stand to be gravely affected by this change in how Facebook ranks videos. Many publishers have specialised in short, bite-size video posts on Facebook. And although Facebook seems to be downplaying the potential impact of this News Feed update for publishers, the reality is that publishers will likely need to adapt to Facebook’s new preference for longer-form content.

Donald Trump Muslim immigration ban: US border patrol 'checking people's Facebook for political views'

Image
US border agents are checking people’s Facebook pages for their political views before allowing them into the country, an immigration lawyer has claimed.  Houston-based lawyer Mana Yegani said several green card holders, who have the right to live and work in the US, were detained by border agents at American airports hours after President Donald Trump signed an executive order banning immigration  from seven countries  in the Middle East and Africa.  The ban affects travellers with passports from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen and also extends to green card holders who are granted authorization to live and work in the United States, according to a Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman.

Trump threatened with 20-percent customs duty on products from Mexico

Image
The dispute between America and Mexico is escalating.  Firstly, a planned meeting on the subject of the wall of the border.  Then Trump announces what might threaten the next neighbour in the south. To finance the construction of the wall on the border with Mexico, the American President Donald Trump could introduce a penalty.  Imports from the neighbouring country with a duty of 20 percent to be an example, said on Thursday the Trump spokesman, Sean Spicer.  Having previously said that this import tax was the first step towards a larger tax reform and as a measure to finance the wall by Mexico, he relativised a short time later: "This is not a political proposal, but just an example of how the Wall could be paid." In this way, ten billion dollars can be taken annually, which makes the border "easy to pay".  The Mexican national, Enrique Peña Nieto, had previously refused to accept Trumps, that Mexico should pay billions for the construction of the fronti...

UK government loses Brexit case, must consult Parliament.

Image
LONDON (AP) — Britain's government must get parliamentary approval before starting the process of leaving the European Union, the Supreme Court ruled Tuesday, potentially delaying Prime Minister Theresa May's plans to trigger negotiations by the end of March. The 8-3 ruling forces the government to put a bill before Parliament, giving pro-EU politicians a chance to soften the terms of Brexit — Britain's exit from the EU. "Leave" campaigners had objected, saying Parliament shouldn't have the power to overrule the electorate, which voted to leave the bloc in a June 23 referendum. The Supreme Court's decision doesn't mean that Britain will remain in the EU. But it could delay the process — though May's Downing Street office said its timetable remained on track. May had said she would use centuries-old powers known as a royal prerogative to invoke Article 50 of the EU treaty and launch two years of exit talks. The powers — traditionally held by the ...

Official: Trump wants to slash EPA workforce, budget

Image
WASHINGTON (AP) — The former head of President Donald Trump's transition team at the Environmental Protection Agency said Thursday he expects the new administration to seek a significant budget and staff cuts. Myron Ebell said in an interview with The Associated Press that Trump is likely to seek significant reductions to the agency's workforce — currently about 15,000 employees nationwide. Ebell, who left the transition team last week, declined to discuss specific numbers of EPA staff that could be targeted for pink slips. Asked what he would personally like to see, however, Ebell said slashing the agency's size by about half would be a good start. "Let's aim for half and see how it works out, and then maybe we'll want to go further," said Ebell, who has returned to his position as director of the Center for Energy and Environment at the Competitive Enterprise Institute.
