 Family bonus that family minister Franziska Giffey (SPD) has asked for in the corona crisis has been under discussion for a few weeks now. The politician was now able to implement her proposal to support families with a one-time grant of 300 euros per child.

The family bonus is intended to compensate families for the particular burden of the corona crisis and to benefit a total of over 16 million children. According to the Ministry of Finance, the costs are around 4.3 billion euros.

The payment of the family bonus should begin in autumn 2020. According to several reports, which refer to information from the Reuters news agency, a payment of two partial amounts of 150 euros each is planned. The division should avoid jeopardizing maintenance claims.

Payment should be linked to child benefit

The family bonus is probably linked to the monthly child benefit payment. In September and October 2020, the partial amounts are to be transferred together with the child benefit. The additional money is not earmarked and should, therefore, be freely available to families. One of the goals is to increase consumption and boost the economy weakened by the corona crisis.

The second Corona Tax Assistance Act, which regulates the family bonus, has yet to be initiated by the cabinet and passed by the Bundestag. The farewell is planned for the coming week.
